President’s Blog – February 2013

From the President

Greetings ACS Members, friends and colleagues.
My thoughts, on behalf of us all go out to the victims of the bushfires, floods and cyclones that have ravaged our Australian landscape again this summer. They seem to be with us each and every year, but you just don’t ever seem to get used to them. To all those cinematographers working to cover the stories and bring them into our homes each day, I say thank you for all your hard work and your heartfelt images.

Member Congratulations

Congratulations to ACS member Warwick Thornton on receiving the 2013 AACTA AWARD FOR BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY for Director, Wayne Blair’s successful feature film “The Sapphires”.

Congratulations also to Peter Levy ACS ASC for his ASC nomination in the Half-hour Episodic Series category for Showtime’s House of Lies (“Gods of Dangerous Financial Instruments”)

The winners in all categories will be announced at the ASC Awards on February 10, where Dean Semler ACS ASC will be presented with his ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.

Thanks to the Movie Network Channels

I’m sorry to inform you that our long-term partnership with The Movie Network has come to an end. I received the following from our staunch supporter and former CEO, Tony Forrest.

“As you probably know, the Movie Network Partners, Warner Bros, Disney, MGM and Village Roadshow decided to disband their Joint Venture at the end of 2012. They will individually negotiate with Foxtel and other carriers for programme supply going forward. This has meant my now closing down the business I set up for them a short 13 years ago. Many of our staff have already secured positions in like fields. Without exception, I have had a gun team.”

I thank Tony and all the Movie Network team for their contribution and their support of the ACS and the Australian Film and Television industry. Under Tony’s inspired leadership, the Movie Network nurtured and encouraged Australian talent and production, and afforded many opportunities to those who may not have necessarily been afforded said opportunities. This year’s National Awards will not be televised and for that I am very sorry, but am grateful for the 3 previous years where our ACS Awards have been available to the public, and those members unable to attend.

Geoff Boyle ACS – RAW Workshop Tour

I’m pleased to announce that plans are underway for the ACS 2013 series of RAW WORKSHOPS with world renowned Cinematographer and CML website founder Geoff Boyle FKBS.
In this series of Workshops, Geoff Boyle will take you through RAW workflow from acquisition, to on set media management, to post production. With a healthy mix of theory, practical demonstrations, personal observations and hands on sessions, you will discover the everyday issues of using RAW, what it adds and how to handle it.

2013 ACS National Awards for Cinematography

Canberra will be celebrating its Centenary in 2013 and there will be no bigger night than May 25th when Gold award winning cinematographers meet to celebrate their night of nights in our Nation’s Capital! Everyone is warmly welcome to come to Canberra for a weekend of festivities. More details soon, just save the date now so you don’t miss out, as the ACT Branch, under the leadership of Robb Shaw Velzen, will no doubt have some surprises in store.

Until next time…

Ron Johanson ACS
