VALE – Joel Peterson (Director/Cinematographer) – 28th March 1954 – 10th August 2017

The Society is saddened by the news that long time ACS NSW Branch member Joel Peterson has passed away.

Joel Peterson’s resume is undoubtedly one of the best in the business; Joel is a graduate of the Australian Film TV and Radio School where he received his degree in cinematography with recognition in direction. With extensive experience in film-making, working on big and small budget productions, as a DOP and as a director. He has more than 40 major documentary and drama productions to his credit.

Prior to his AFTRS degree he was a successful film-maker in his own right, having completed a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in Hobart, with three of his four films selected for screening at the Sydney and Melbourne film festivals.

He worked professionally as a camera assistant and Production/Unit manager before film school. Since completing three years at the national film school in 1986, he has been nominated for Best Cinematography at the AFI awards and been awarded certificates and a Golden Tripod from the Australian Cinematographers Society as well as Screen awards from the US/International Film Festival.

Joel was 2nd unit DOP on the Wim Wenders feature Until The End Of The World and DOP on the features You Can’t Push The River, Custody , and Witchhunt. He has also shot/directed various music videos, documentaries and TV commercials.

His work has covered social, political, environmental and inter-personal themes, taking him to the “four corners” of the globe. He has worked on projects as diverse as filming wildlife in remote African mountains, to wild street gangs in the hub of Hong Kong; from the unique and often inaccessible landscapes of Antarctica and Tibet to the big, bustling cities of London and New York.

Joel’s visual flair and depth of experience means a film shot on a ‘low budget’ is given added production value on the screen. Joel has shot for National Geographic internationally, for the London-based Cafe Productions and Beyond Productions in Australia.

Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.
