Vale – John Chataway

The Australian Film & Television Industry has lost a true friend.

Sadly, by now you will have heard of the passing of John Chataway.

I wrote to John’s brother, Richard on behalf of all members and the National Executive, to pass on our collective thoughts at this very sad time for the family.

Ron Johanson ACS
National President

Richard’s response is below:

“One of the Good Guys” by Richard Chataway ACS

Dear Ron

Thank you so much for your kind words and the support of the ACS.

John took to cinematography with the same passion he attacked all things in his life, inspiring those around him with his enthusiasm and mastery of all things technical. He had an amazing ability to enjoy to the full everything that he did and allowed that happiness to radiate around him.

John achieved so much in his business life that one might say that he ran his race so fast that it was over before its time.

As my older brother he was constantly supportive and always entertaining. Everyone always wanted to sit at his end of the table.

For one of the “good guys” to be taken so young after such a brief illness is terribly hard to understand.

As John would have cried, “That wasn’t part of the plan!”

But he leaves behind a wonderful legacy of goodwill, talented colleagues, along with a business, which will continue to amaze the world with its innovation and dedication to excellence.

I was always proud to call him my brother.
