Born February 19, 1927 – Died, September 7, 2013.
Esdras, known as Es, was residing in Wesley Gardens, Belrose and his passing was due to a recurrence of cancer.
He was born in the Kempsey NSW area and came to Sydney in his teenage years.
His early training, in the field of audio, was with AWA and he became an experienced sound recordist. He often worked as a freelance field sound recordist, mainly on Film Australia productions. But his keenest interest was in cinematography, particularly documentaries.
Es had a strong Christian faith and took up a position with The Australian Religious Film Society, in 1952 as the Societies NSW Managing Director. Apart from the production of films, his role included the wide distribution of 16mm films, tapes and DVD’s. He retained that position until his retirement in 1992 when his son, Wayne took over the role. Following Es retiring and due to changes in the market place, such as the Digital age, ARFS became known as Christian Multi Media.
Over the years, Es filmed a wide range of 16mm documentaries for organisations and groups. A small selection of these include Australian Inland Mission, Methodist and Uniting Churches, Baptist and Anglican Churches, Papua New Guinea United Church and The Voice of the Martyrs.
He also produced, directed and filmed many documentaries in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, outback Australia, Mexico and in Aboriginal communities. These documentaries have been shown in cinemas and on television and have been distributed in several countries. His cinematography earned him ACS accreditation.
Es’ wife, Dorothy, died in 2002 and he is survived by daughter Cheryl and her husband Peter, son Wayne and his wife Rosemary. There are also two grandsons, Simon and Luke and their wives Gillian and Caroline and six great grandchildren.
