Inducted into ACS Hall of Fame – 2009
Jim Gilbert was born in England and migrated to Australia in 1952 with his family. His first interest in the Industry was working as a spool boy and assistant Projectionist. In 1954 he commenced work in the production side of the film industry working with Kinetone Productions owned and operated by the late Al Burne ACS from his Queensland home with a film laboratory operating under the house. Jim’s main interest was in camerawork and he worked as cameraman on many news stories for Movietone, Kinetone was the Queensland Representative of Movietone.
When television started in Queensland in 1959 he became the senior news cameraman for BTQ7 when the first transmission went to air. Over a number of years Jim covered a wide range of news stories for the television channel, capturing much of Queensland’s history, and for sports lovers he filmed the famous tied cricket test between Australia and the West Indies in 1960.
In 1966 Jim left BTQ7 to enter the TV commercial and documentary fields. He worked for a variety of production companies until his retirement from the film and television industry in the early
Jim served for many years on ACS Queensland committees, serving as ACS Queensland State Secretary from 1965-1972, and served as State President from 1972 through to the early 1980s. Jim had given an enormous amount of time and support to the Society, and helped to consolidate the other State Branches during the early years of the ACS.
Jim was granted ACS Accreditation in 1976. And in recognition of his contribution to the Society, was inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame in 2009.
