Known for his creative energy, infectious enthusiasm and outstanding body of work, Mark Wareham ACS has built a career that has made him one of Australia’s most respected and in-demand cinematographers.
Mark’s passion for filmmaking began in his final years of high school, inspired by a teacher who encouraged creativity and experimentation. Alongside several classmates, he began making short films — an early spark that would soon become a lifelong calling. One of those student films was selected for a Griffith University film competition, prompting Mark to enrol in film studies soon after.
But the industry came calling early.
After just six months at university, Mark deferred his studies when he was offered a role with a Brisbane-based production company — an opportunity too good to pass up. There, he immersed himself in all aspects of production, gaining invaluable hands-on experience across multiple departments. Yet it was always the camera department that drew him most strongly, and it quickly became clear where his future lay.
A pivotal moment came when producer friends encouraged Mark to look toward television drama. Soon after, he was given an opportunity by good friend and future mentor John Stokes ACS, who invited him to shoot second unit material on a local television series. Mark’s talent was immediately apparent. His eye, instinct and ability to deliver under pressure quickly earned the trust of producers and directors, and he soon established himself as a rising force in Australian cinematography.
From those early beginnings, Mark has gone on to craft an extraordinary screen career.
With more than 75 screen credits to his name, his work across television and feature film has consistently displayed a remarkable command of visual storytelling, tone and emotional truth.
His television credits include acclaimed productions such as Cloudstreet, Underbelly, Redfern Now, Cleverman, Mystery Road, Boy Swallows Universe and La Brea. His feature film work includes Felony, A Month of Sundays, Jasper Jones and Beast of War. His international experience is equally impressive, with second and action unit credits on major productions including Anacondas, The Condemned, Triangle, The Wolverine (Japan Unit), and the Chinese production The Whistleblower.
What has always set Mark apart is not only the quality of his work, but the spirit in which he brings it to life. He is admired not just for his talent behind the camera, but for the positivity, generosity and calm confidence he brings to every set. Directors, producers and crews continue to seek him out not only because he is a brilliant cinematographer — but because he is such a great person to work with.
A long-time supporter of the Society, and former President of the Queensland Branch, Mark has also given generously back to the wider cinematography community, mentoring and encouraging the next generation of image-makers.
